Stars of tomorrow shine at The Ian Poulter Invitational 2012

ijpthumb.jpg Fresh from a top-10 finish at Lytham, Ian Poulter was at Woburn bright and early the day after this years Open Championship to welcome 87 rising junior stars from across the UK and indeed around the world to his annual Junior Invitational over the stunning Marquess Course at Woburn.

With handicaps ranging from 0.8 to 16, the assembled players were treated to a day they will never forget, and a chance to get up close and personal with one of golf’s most approachable characters as he toured the manicured fairways of the Marquess Course on his customised golf buggy courtesy of Club Car.    This year was the seventh time that Woburn have hosted the IJP Invitational with Ian also representing Woburn as their International Touring Pro for the past nine years.

Sophie Madden, of West Essex Golf Club, won first prize for the lowest gross score, and Joshua Pearson, who plays at John O’ Gaunt Golf Club near Bedford, won the prize for the lowest net score. Each was rewarded for their performance with a voucher for a set of Cobra irons. Unsurprisingly, given the pride that Ian takes in his appearance, prizes were also awarded for the ‘Best Dressed’ player, which went to James Greatbanks from Norfolk Premier Golf, and for ‘Best Hairstyle’, an accolade that was given to Oliver Cribb from the Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club.

Ian commented  “We’ve been running this event for seven years now and I have to say I’m always incredibly impressed not only by the standard of the boys and girls competing but also the spirit in which they play the game and the way they conduct themselves out on the course. The clinic has become one of the traditions of the day and I enjoy passing on some of my experience and answering questions. It really was a great day.”

IJP's clinic is always a popular end to the day with tips & tricks on show.

Each player had their photograph taken with Ian, as a personal memento of their day, as well as receiving a gift bag containing an item from Ian’s clothing range, IJP Design, Ian Poulter Invitational accessories specially created for the day by PRGolf and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. There was also the chance to enter a competition to beat Ian in a nearest-the-pin challenge in Woburn’s new Performance Centre.  This year the charity charity associated with the event was Dreamflight of which Ian is a huge supporter.  Dreamflight helps send  seriously ill children on their dream holiday of a lifetime.
